I got a Kodak instamatic camera when I was six and I have been looking at the world through an artistic lens ever since. The camera and thankfully my skills have improved, but I still feel the same excitement as when art was just my passion not my job. Although I do miss those little flash cubes...
In high school I realized that art could be a career and credit my school and my teachers for opening my eyes to different paths. As a result I have a strong belief in early and continued arts education in schools and continue to work with youth art programs on a variety of levels.
I studied Religion in college.... yes Religion.. even though I knew I wanted to be a photojournalist. I decided not to go to art school because I would only learn about how to take pictures and not about the world and people I wanted to photograph.
I assisted a variety of photographers and designers and was fortunate to have mentors as well as bosses. They helped me develop my style and didn’t try to impose their vision on me.They taught me how to tell a story with pictures, how to intertwine words and images on a page and most of all the importance (as well as the necessary skills) to be a professional.
Since then I have worked internationally from war zones to national corporations to family events. But more than anything, I love my job and that comes through in my work. |
